I know this home décor style is now super trendy, but that doesn’t matter because I love it. But sadly, my wallet does not love it because then I would have no money if I could outfit my apartment with beautiful things.

Sigh

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a transplant here in the former Victoria County here in Ontario. I came here years ago (escaping a marriage) with only a small u-haul van filled with some of my most favourite things. One of those things is a dining room table. Now this sucker is heavy, it’s solid wood and it’s not going anywhere

please ignore the water spots

Here she is, I have four original chairs, the other two are downstairs in storage. I really like how small she is pictured here but the beauty of this piece is that with the internal extension and opening the side-flaps I can easily seat 10 or more people. I even still have the internal extension tucked away in some closet somewhere.

I really love this table for many reasons, the first is that I grew up eating on this table with my family at dinner time. My whole childhood (along with my brothers’) was spent eating/playing/hanging out around this table. And I have it all the way up here with me. It has become more meaningful to me since the birth of my firstborn. One day us three will all eat here too, but for now he’s too little.

Another reason why I love her so? Well, my father was up here recently visiting while my partner was away for work and he told me that him and my mom were given this table when they were first married by my grandparents way back in 1980. 1980!!! That’s five years before I was born. But what makes this bittersweet is that my grandfather passed away this past January. So in addition to several small things I have from him, turns out this table is also from him too.

Now I don’t know how long they had it, or where they got it from. And now I can’t ask him anymore (death sucks). But I feel like there’s a small part of my heritage in this table and I can’t wait to start having family meals with my son and my partner around it.

One thing I want to do is to fix the water spots, so if you have any ideas, please share. I’ve tried a iron with a cotton towel but that didn’t work. I think these spots are really old, so I’m not sure if they will ever come out. Maybe I’ll have to sand it down and re-finish it? Eek. That seems risky. Anyways, here’s one of my favourite things in my apartment. Stay tuned for more old things made of wood.
